Citrus scents like lime and mandarin are associated with lifting mood and boosting energy, which is why they’re often used in aromatherapy blends meant to feel fresh and invigorating.

Limonene

Is the compound responsible for that sharp citrus smell, is one of the most studied scent molecules in aromatherapy and is often linked to reduced stress and improved alertness. Mandarin brings a softer, sweeter edge alongside lime’s sharper zing, rounding the top notes out rather than letting them feel one dimensional.

Basil

Is linked to mental clarity and focus, working well alongside the brighter citrus notes rather than competing with them.

It’s traditionally been used to ease mental fatigue and support concentration, which is part of why it pairs so naturally with a citrus base rather than a heavier, sweeter one.

Together, the citrus and herbal notes create a scent that feels less like relaxation and more like a reset, the kind of candle you’d light at a desk or during a busy afternoon rather than last thing at night.

General Candle Advice

First burn

Let your candle burn for at least 1–2 hours the first time you light it. This gives the wax time to melt fully across to the edges. Skipping this step can cause tunnelling, where the candle burns a narrow hole down the centre and leaves wasted wax around the sides on every burn after.

Trim the wick

Trim the wick to about 5mm before each burn. A too-long wick causes a bigger flame, soot, and faster burning. A small pair of scissors or a wick trimmer does the job, just avoid touching a hot wick with your fingers

Burn time

Don’t burn for more than 3–4 hours at a time. The wax pool gets too hot beyond that, which can cause the container to overheat and shortens the overall life of the candle.

Keep it centred

If the wick starts leaning or drifting off centre while the wax is still soft (usually early in a burn), gently nudge it back with a cocktail stick or similar. This helps it burn more evenly.

Safety basics

Keep away from drafts, curtains, and anything flammable. Never leave burning unattended, and keep out of reach of children and pets. Extinguish with a snuffer or by dipping the wick into the wax rather than blowing, this prevents hot wax splatter and smoke.

Getting the last of it

Once you’re down to about 1cm of wax, it’s time to stop burning, the container can get too hot and the scent throw weakens anyway.
