She Doesn't Have It All Together. She Just Locks the Bathroom Door.

You Know Her

You know her. The woman who walks into the room looking like she slept eight hours, drank her two litres of water and answered every email before breakfast. Her hair behaves, her voice is calm and nothing seems to rattle her.

You've probably decided she has some secret system. She’s bound to have a nanny, a cleaner and a partner who actually remembers bin day.

Here's her secret: she doesn't have any of that. She's just figured out what the rest of us keep forgetting: nobody is going to hand you time for yourself. Not your boss, not your family, not the never ending to do list. You have to steal it.

Why We Never Do It

This is the truth nobody says out loud. It’s not that we’ve forgotten how to rest, it’s that we’ve been taught not to.

Somewhere along the way, rest got rebranded as a reward. Something you earn once the washing's folded, the inbox is empty and everyone else is fed, watered and happy. But the truth is, that day never comes. The list resets every morning, like Groundhog Day.

Now, being busy gets the gold star. "I'm shattered" has become a humble brag. Stopping feels lazy, and sitting still for twenty minutes can feel almost rebellious.

Good! Let's be rebels.

Your 20 Minute Escape Plan

Tonight, once the chaos settles (or even if it doesn't), try this.

  1. Claim the space. Bathroom, bedroom, garden bench, the car on the drive. Anywhere with a door, ideally one that locks. Tell the household you're unavailable. You don't owe anyone an explanation.
  2. Banish the phone. Not face down next to you. In another room. If that feels terrifying, that's exactly why you need to do it.
  3. Light a candle. Scent is one of the quickest ways to tell your brain the day is done, because smell is wired closely to the parts of the brain that handle memory and emotion. Soy wax tends to burn slower and softer than paraffin, so you get a gentle glow for longer. Pick one to suit your mood: something soft like Sweet Pea, or Be Chilled if the name alone sounds like a prescription.
  4. Kill the big light. Let the candle do the work. Soft, low light nudges your body towards wind down mode.
  5. Hold something real. Pop a crystal in your palm, an amethyst or a piece of sodalite, and give your restless hands something to do. Whatever you believe about crystals, the cool weight of a stone is a lovely way to pull yourself back into the moment.
  6. Breathe like you mean it. In for four, out for six. Five rounds. Longer out breaths help switch on your body's natural calm.
  7. Do nothing useful. Sink into a bath with a handful of bath salts. Read three pages of a novel. Stare at the flame. The only rule is that it can't be productive. No mental shopping lists allowed.

When your twenty minutes are up, blow out the candle (never leave one burning unattended) and notice how you feel.

What Actually Changes

That calm woman you admire? Her secret isn't that she does more. It's that she protects a little bit of time for herself.

Twenty minutes won't fix your life. But do it regularly and you might notice you snap less, sleep a bit easier and stop running on fumes. You show up better for everyone else, because you've finally shown up for yourself.

And the best bit? Nothing you normally prioritise falls apart. If anything, you tackle it better, with a refreshed mind rather than a drained one. Suddenly you're the one who seems strangely unflappable, the one someone else admires from across the room. Little do they know about the locked bathroom door.

Your Permission Slip

If you need one, consider this your official permission slip. You don't need to finish everything first. You don't need to earn it. And you definitely don't need to feel guilty.

Tonight, steal your twenty minutes. Lock the door, light the candle and tell the busyness of life to do one for a bit. You're doing you.
